Wong Carwise's 2000 masterpiece, In the Mood for Love, has captivated audiences since its [music] rather chaotic premiere at Can Film Festival. A meditation on not just a feeling, but the atmosphere of an era, the film managed to capture a haunting, mournful truth within its beauty.
It continues to place in the top five of best films of all time lists around the world and continues to pull in new fans year after year. But what is it that makes this story of longing and regret so [music] deeply affecting?
Let's dive into our total take on [music] In the Mood for Love. This is the Total Take where we break down the most analyzable films and TV shows of all time through visual storytelling, writing, world, symbolism, and impact.
Our first category is visual storytelling. The cinematography, editing, the former [music] style. How do the visuals tell and elevate the story? In the mood for Love is more concerned with the feelings of moments in time rather than specifics of plot or story. It seeks to replicate and dig
into the atmosphere of this world in order to better find the truths hiding underneath the surface. The film follows two neighbors, Sue, a secretary, and Chiao, a journalist. Packed into tight shared housing, constantly surrounded by neighbors and noise, the pair at first only interact in passing. But soon they
come to realize that these close quarters have led to an unfortunate spark of intimacy between their spouses who have begun having an affair. [music] Not sure if the other is yet aware, they politely broach the subject one day, [music] asking about nice items that the other spouse has been gifted and getting
confirmation [music] that they were indeed presents from the other's spouse. Instead of bubbling with rage or despair, they both instead become filled with a desire to figure out why their spouses would choose to step out of their marriages.
>> This leads to them role-playing stories of their spouse's relationship to try to uncover what really drove them to the affair. Like the film itself, though they play out dialogue and plot of their madeup [music] stories, they're more interested in recreating the mood of the events. They know [music] that is the
only way they'll be able to truly understand these feelings.
>> The film visualizes this focus in a number of ways. We're pulled along through its uncertain flow of time on its painterly visuals, which often slow to a crawl at opportune moments to highlight the tiny yet incredibly impactful minutia that builds the deepest part of the feeling of a budding
relationship. Hands nearly brushing, almost saying something but stopping short. Confinement is a [music] major component of the feel both in tone and visuals. These characters are trapped inside [music] of a constricting world trying to find small moments of release.
We can see this in [music] all of the tight spaces throughout the film. Tiny corridors, compact rooms. Even when the characters do venture outside, the streets feel like they're closing in on them. But even in these small spaces, we can feel the emptiness that surrounds them, creating the bubble of loneliness
