There's an alarming scene in Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights where Cathy's new husband shows her their bedroom for the first time. The walls are covered in her own skin. Not metaphorically, he had her skin, her veins printed on silk, stuffed, and covered in latex so it could sweat. And he stands there and
praises the color of it, the whiteness of it. Man played by an actor of Pakistani descent. >> Your bedroom.
When they asked me what color should be, I said [music] it should be the most beautiful color in the world.
Color of my wife's sweet face. Here, >> [music] >> look. The freckle from your cheek. It's a disturbing image, and it tells you almost everything you need to know about what Fennell has done to one of literature's most ferocious women.
Because what Fennell has actually made, whether she knows it or not, is Barbie's Wuthering Heights. Fennell is up front about what she was going for. This is her favorite book in the world, she said so repeatedly. Fanatical is her word for it.
>> You know, and I think that I knew being a kind of fanatic about the book myself, I knew that whatever I did could never encompass everyone's love of the book.
>> But she also says she never set out to make a faithful adaptation. She couldn't hope to encompass the greatness of the book, so instead she made a film about how the book made her feel.
Specifically, how it made her feel as a teenager. I can't adapt the book as as it is, but I can try and make an approximation of the way it made me feel when I was a teenager. And to recreate that teenage feeling, she needed two things: a blank canvas to project her fantasies onto, and a man to perform
them. The framework she chose, consciously or not, is Barbie. Cathy and Heathcliff Ken. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. This video is about what happens when you love a book and completely misread it. Warning, this video includes spoilers for both Emerald Fennell's film and Emily Brontë's novel.
